The holidays are here, which means it’s time for decorations, fun and family. And we all know our pets are part of the family!

Nothing can spoil the holidays like an injury to your pet, so let’s review a few holiday safety tips for cats and dogs to ensure your Christmas or Hanukkah is full of joy.

Don’t put additives in your Christmas tree water. Pets will drink water that is available to them and many additives are poisonous.

Make sure your tree water isn’t stagnant. Stagnant water contains bacteria.

If you have a new dog decorate your tree as if you have a toddler, so place everything higher up on the tree. One wag of a dog’s tail could mean shattered glass all over the floor.

If you have a cat you might want to avoid tinsel. Pets will ingest anything including mistletoe and ribbon. So pay attention to what you are putting out and where you’re putting it.

Never leave lit candles unattended. Use caution lighting the menorah or with candles that can easily be knocked over.

Exposed wires can be dangerous because pets often chew them. Try Bitter Apple Spray or Bitter Yuck Spray to keep your dogs and cats away.

Having a party? Give your pet a safe, quiet place to retreat. Step it up a notch by giving them a chew or puzzle feeder to occupy themselves. And don’t forget to put a sign on the door asking guests to keep the door closed.

Giving a pet a gift this holiday season? Make sure pet toys are all safe for cats and dogs.

Foods to avoid:

 • Any cooked bones, as they can splinter

 • Chocolate

 • Candy or desserts with sweeteners (be careful of wrappers too)

 • Alcohol

 • Onion and garlic

 • Nutmeg

 • Grapes or raisins
